Lib Dem councillor defects to Conservatives

Press Release : 10 April 2008

Shropshire Conservatives welcomed former LibDem councillor David Gibbon into the Conservative Group at Shirehall in Shrewsbury today.

Cllr Gibbon has represented Much Wenlock at Shropshire County Council since 2005. He was formerly a District Councillor for the Much Wenlock ward on Bridgnorth District Council.

Councillor Gibbon said: "I have been attracted by David Cameron's leadership and am convinced that the Conservatives now stand for values which I share. I am afraid I have become increasingly disillusioned with LibDems both locally and nationally, particularly over the last 6 months. I look forward to working with the Conservative Group at Shirehall and in helping secure re-election of our hard working MP Philip Dunne."

Local MP Philip Dunne said: "I am delighted that David Gibbon has decided to join the Conservatives. He is a strong local councillor with whom I have worked closely on cross-party issues in Much Wenlock in recent years. I look forward to working with him in the future."

Cllr Malcolm Pate said: "David Gibbon is very welcome in the Conservative Group where I am sure he will make a strong contribution to the administration. Conservatives strength on the Council now rises to 27 giving an overall majority of 6. His defection shows the Liberals are in disarray in Shropshire."

Mr Dunne added: "This move signals further political momentum towards the Conservatives. Much Wenlock became a LibDem bridgehead under my predecessor as MP, but the tide is clearly turning."
