Conservative Shadow Transport Secretary joins battle to save Nuneaton’s trains
Press Release :
28 April 2008
The battle to save Nuneaton’s train services from cuts was boosted today by the visit of Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Theresa Villiers MP, to Nuneaton.
The Shadow Cabinet member visited Nuneaton and met with Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Simon Rouse and Council Deputy Leader Jeff Clarke to discuss the proposed cuts and to commit support. Theresa Villiers said: “Nuneaton’s train services are clearly important and it is clear to me more has to be done to get the government and Virgin to find a solution for Nuneaton. I will be writing to the Chief Executive of Virgin Trains to seek an urgent meeting to put Nuneaton’s case and get them to think again.”
Theresa Villiers visit came as the news broke that Virgin have refused to save any of the off peak trains. 8 out of 10 off-peak services will be cut under the new timetable. During her visit, Theresa Villiers also took time to hear the concerns of representatives of the Nuneaton Rail Users Group and committed to raise their concerns directly with Virgin.
Simon Rouse, the Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Nuneaton said:
“I am delighted Theresa took the time to come down and see first hand the impact these cuts would have on Nuneaton. The Rail Users Group has fought a first class campaign and Nuneaton’s case needs to be put strongly to Virgin. The fact that the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport is now going to do that is a real boost to the campaign. Nuneaton has lacked a powerful voice in Westminster on this issue for too long and our case needs to be heard.”
