Conservatives triumph in Worcestershire County Council by-election

Conservative Peter Tomlinson has won the Ombersley Division on Worcestershire County Council, keeping the seat blue after the death of Conservative Councillor Maurice Broomfield.

Peter secured 956 votes (63.2%, up 15.3% on 2013), with the Lib Dems coming second on 224, UKIP on 212 and Independent on 120. UKIP support down was 19%, with no candidate being put forward by Labour or Green.

Councillor Paul Middlebrough, deputy chairman of Mid-Worcestershire Conservative Association, said: "We're absolutely delighted, the key thing for the Conservatives is that our share of the vote is back to where it was in 2009.

"That's because the UKIP vote has collapsed significantly - it shows we've got a different set of politics here post-Brexit."
